Gaudeamus has invited two young ensembles for participation in the Gaudeamus Festival 2024: Trio Catch from Hamburg (Germany) and Riot Ensemble from London (UK).

Trio Catch

To catch the audience with a virtuosic dialogue between the very different timbres of the clarinet, cello, and piano; through the joy of making music together and searching tirelessly for a shared sound. This is what makes Trio Catch stand out. Trio Catch is Martin Adámek (clarinet), Eva Boesch (violoncello) and Sun-Young Nam (piano).

The trio have worked with numerous composers throughout the thirteen years of their collaboration, including Mark Andre, Georges Aperghis, Beat Furrer and Helmut Lachenmann, with whom they are also connected through various CD productions and radio recording projects. Trio Catch’s debut CD “in between” was released in 2014 on the col legno label, followed by the release of their second CD “Sanh” in 2016. In 2019, the label bastille musique released the CD “As if”, which was awarded the German Record Critics’ Award (Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik), the Supersonic Award Luxembourg and the Clef d’Or de ResMusica in France.

During Gaudeamus Festival, they work like an ensemble-in-residence. Present in Utrecht for 5 days, including the week’s academy period, during which they work together with several young composers who develop sketches or complete works to be discussed, rehearsed and tried-out with the ensemble. One of the invited composers is Ulysses Journey composer Eneko Lacalle.

Riot Ensemble

Riot Ensemble connects people to great contemporary music in concerts and events that are just as innovative, vibrant and rewarding as the music itself. The members of Riot are some of the top European soloists in new music, and with Riot they work as performers, curators, commissioners, and collaborators, creating and producing a diverse array of projects. An exploration of the duality between hi- and lo-fi, and of water, as giver and taker of life: this is the piece entitled Underwater Music #1 by Beniamino Fiorini, nominee for the Gaudeamus Award 2024, and performed in this concert by the Riot Ensemble. Plus a brand new work by fellow nominee Cem Güven and a co-commission with Time of Music to Finnish composer Tuomas Kettunen. In recent years, Gaudeamus has built up a lasting relationship with this exciting British ensemble, and we are proud to welcome them again this year.
