BUI is named after the Promoting Utrecht Improvisation Foundation. BUI seeks a different perspective: detached from the ever-accelerating rhythm of 21st century life, its own pace of seeking connection, delight and new creativity. For BUI, improvisation is the best tool for this purpose. This ensemble of artists improvises with each other, with space and with chance. They create musical performances in which they enter into a dialogue with the place in which they play: the space and its sounds become a musical co-creator.
In this In-Situ/City performance, titled What are You building in There?!, musicians, audience and passersby are playfully mixed – together they create a temporary sound sculpture. It is termed, a “ritual playground.” It’s about playfulness, connection, and above all, a shared, unique experience that changes the perspective of a familiar place. It’s a site-specific performance, taking advantage of the unique qualities of the found space. Its auditory and visual elements include live miniatures, sophisticated compositions, modular visual objects, moving soundscapes, saxophone with feedback, stereo trombone and divisive rhythms.
